Ear Tubes

The last couple of weeks we have made a few trips to the doctor's offices. Connor started complaining that his left ear hurt, and if we touched it or bumped it he would say that it hurts. While I was working Donovan took Connor to the pediatrician's office. The oncall doctor said that his ears and tubes looked fine. I new that we had an appointment with Dr. Bean the next week so I thought I would ask her. Dr. Bean said that both tubes were displaced and putting pressure on his eardrum and that is why it was bothering him. Of course she was not going to pull them out we would have to go to Connor's ENT. I called that afternoon and got Connor an appoinment for the next day. So off to the ENT we went, he looked at his tubes confirmed what Dr. Bean said and sent us home with ear drops to soften the wax surrounding the tubes. After 4 days of drops we headed back to the ENT. I talked with Connor numerous times in that 4 days to tell him that they were going to look in his ears again and take his tubes out, we explained that it might hurt but if he was so brave and let them take the tubes out he could go to Target and pick a toy. I know amazing Mom I totally used bribery. So the PA took out the right tube first Connor was so good and held really still, he didn't complain that it hurt, but when the PA went to take out left tube he told him NO. So the PA looked at me and said it looks like he isn't going to let me take out the left tube you might need to go up to Primary's and have them put him under to get the left tube. Seriously I was so mad who lets a 3 year old tell them what to do, I asked if I could just hold him, he said no, I tried convince Connor to let him take out the left tube but he refused. I finally convinced the PA to let us come back another day and try again. Again not another proud parenting moment but hey, on the way to the car I explained to Connor that we were not going to go to Target and get a toy because we had to use toy money to come back to the doctor next week to get the left tube out. Okay I know it sounds awful but Connor does better when you explain things to him. As I was getting Connor in his car seat he begged me to go back and get the doctor to get the left tube out, after we talked for a couple minutes we headed back inside to see if they would try again. Thankfully they let us back in the same room, I gave Connor a sucker and let him watch tractors on my phone and he laughed as the PA took out the left tube. Finally we are free of both tubes and Connor picked out a new Tractor at Target. So after 2 weeks and multiple trips and co pays at the doctors our tube fiasco is over.

  1. Wow! I am so impressed at how you handled that and were able to get Connor to go back in to get the other tube out. Good for you!!
